Spoiler alert! The following contains details from Season 4, Episode 2 of "Bridgerton," "Time Transfixed."
Another day, another silly part of society keeping true love from conquering all.
In the second episode of "Bridgerton" Season 4, Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) is on the hunt for the mystery woman he met at the season premiere ball, only he will never find her. That's because she's a maid and he's a nobleman, and the inequities and injustices of this historical society we've come to romanticize are taking a far bigger role in this season than any (non-book readers) might have imagined.
Every good romance couple needs an impediment to their happiness, and to our modern eyes Benedict and Sophie's (Yerin Ha) is the most arbitrary of all. It's in this second episode where the season's literal Cinderella story starts to grate, but as we get to know Sophie via Ha's charming performance, it's a bit easier to get swept away with the fairy tale, even if the show is really dragging things out.

Episode 2 quickly solves the mystery of our silver-clad ingénue who stole Benedict's heart at the masquerade ball. She is Sophie Baek, a maid in the house of Lady Araminta Penwood (Katie Leung), who took advantage of the costume party to sneak in and experience the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Except... is she just a maid? Because Lady Penwood treats her particularly cruelly compared to her other servants. And there's all that talk about Sophie having the same "birthright" as Lady Penwood's daughters Rosamund (Michelle Mao) and Posy (Isabella Wei).
Further flashbacks spell things out. Young, sweet Sophie Baek lived a happy life in the house of her noble father, Lord Penwood, until his new wife showed up. To be fair to Araminta, it looks like her new hubby was hiding an illegitimate daughter from her, and then expected his new bride to take the betrayal (and surprise offspring) in stride. However, under Lady Penwood's roof, Sophie stops getting the noble treatment − no dancing lessons, that's for sure. And when Lord Penwood dies, the villainous step-mother informs poor Sophie that her father left her no inheritance, and to survive, Sophie must become a maid in the Penwood house. And so the familiar, awkward family dynamics are established, right down to Rosamund and Posy's haughty demeanor towards their step-sister/underling. But none of this back story helps Benedict find poor Sophie, or make her an eligible match for him in stratified Regency society.

And in fact, it's Rosamund who is pursuing Benedict most ardently of all the ladies of the ton, after he had Penelope (Nicola Coughlin) put his intentions to wed in Lady Whistledown's column, in hopes of luring out the silver lady he fell for at the ball. Besotted Benedict spends most of the beginning of the episode on the hunt for his love-at-first-sight, interrogating ladies on the promenade and showing up to balls with sister Eloise (Claudia Jessie) in tow for assistance. His fervor for society pleases his mother Violet (Ruth Gemmell), but also frustrates her to the point of squeezing Penelope for information.
She bullies the story out of Penelope, then bullies it out of Benedict, too. Then Violet goes all "CSI: Regency Britain," and sees the Penwood crest on the glove Benedict has from his night at the masquerade. That leads Benedict to think his fair lady might be Posy — and then comes calling, right in front of poor Sophie's nose. Sophie almost walks into the room and announces her identity, but our love story can't end in Episode 2, of course. Sophie holds back and cries in her room. Making things much worse: Benedict's investigation of the Penwood house tips off Araminta that Sophie was the woman at the ball, leading to Sophie's unceremonious dismissal (it turns out she was never paid anyway, so we're hoping this is a good thing in the end).

Sophie says her goodbyes and sets out on her own, while Benedict gives up on his hunt for her without knowing how close he got to the truth. And although she leaves London looking for employment where Lady Penwood's bad mouthing can't reach her, she somehow she ends up at the estate of an acquaintance of Benedict's (blink and you'll miss the passage of time between scenes), where he ends up drunk at a party one night.
When the gross lord of the manor tries to assault one of Sophie's fellow maids, Sophie stands up to him, but then the violent creep is about to harm Sophie. Benedict jumps into the fray and makes the man apologize, even though Sophie is "only a maid." Unsurprisingly, Sophie loses her new job, and Benedict feels so terrible he offers to take her back to London to find her a new position. And now they're off on a road trip together, which seems the perfect circumstance for them to fall well and truly in love. But the one hiccup here is that Sophie hasn't revealed her identity, and Benedict can't (yet) connect her with the woman he found so charming.
As Lady Whistledown says, only time will tell if this rake can figure out what's right under his nose.
