Dick Van Dyke once âpissedâ off longtime friend Mary Tyler Moore, who essentially told him he âainât leavinââ until he redrew his cartoon of her.
Speaking at Vandy High Tea â hosted at the Van Dyke residence in Malibu, Calif., on Nov. 30 â the 99-year-old entertainer recalled the caricature he once drew of Moore, who died at 80 in 2017.
âI made her mouth too big, and she was so pissed at me,â he said at the charity event that raises funds to benefit the Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the in-development Dick Van Dyke Museum.

Van Dyke, who will turn 100 on Dec. 13, continued, âI had to go back and draw it again. I mean, she had a beautiful mouth, but it was generous.â
His wife, Arlene Silver, who was also at the event produced by Chris Isaacson Presents, added, âShe turned the world on with her smile.â
The couple started discussing the Moore caricature after a guest at the event asked Van Dyke whether he is ambidextrous and if he could draw with one hand and write with his other hand.

âWell, back when I was in grade school, you werenât allowed to be left-handed,â he explained. âIâm left-handed, but I had to learn to write with my right hand. I donât know what that did to my brain, but that is really funny.â
âYou were saying what a great artist he is,â Silver, 54, chimed in. âHeâs a great artist. âŠWe got something in the mail the other day. This stained glass of Mary Tyler Moore that you drew for The Dick Van Dyke Show.â
Van Dyke and Moore starred in The Dick Van Dyke Show for five seasons, from 1961 to 1966.
