Linda Perry once asked Billy Corgan to leave a studio session with Courtney Love

Perry praised Love as both tough and gentle and expressed excitement for her upcoming album

Linda Perry wasn't going to let Billy Corgan put a damper on her studio session with Courtney Love.

In a new interview with NME, the 4 Non Blondes singer-songwriter, 61, recalled working on music with Love, 61, while the Smashing Pumpkins rocker, 59, was also present in the recording studio — until Perry asked him to leave.

"Courtney Love is an incredibly intelligent woman. We were working on a record once when Billy Corgan came in and he was a Debbie Downer and ruining the vibe," Perry told the outlet.

The "What's Up?" musician co-wrote several songs on Love's 2004 solo album America's Sweetheart as well as Hole's 2010 album Nobody's Daughter. Corgan also worked on the latter album, which features the song "Samantha" written by Love, Perry and Corgan.

Love and Corgan dated in the early '90s, before she got into a relationship with her late husband Kurt Cobain, and they later briefly reunited in the 2000s.

Without specifying what the three musicians were working on at the time, Perry recalled of their studio session, "Courtney and Billy have incredible history together, but my band said, ‘We can’t continue with this guy.' Finally, I went into the control room, looked at Billy and said: ‘You gotta go, man.'"

"As Courtney’s eyes bulged, I said: ‘You’re walking around like you’re God’s gift to f---ing rock and roll. You’ve got bad energy. I want you out of my studio.' Billy was shocked and left," added Perry.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame member then shared her thoughts on Love. "Courtney couldn’t believe I’d kicked him out of my studio, and thought it was ballsy. Then I realized: ‘Oh, she’s a pussy!’ Courtney acts like this tough person — and she is. She’s very intimidating, but really she is a bottom," began Perry. "She wants to be kind and wants a hug and she’s very gentle, but she has an armor she puts up."

But don't get Perry wrong — she's a fan of Love. "I love her and have had amazing experiences with her," she said. "The world needs Courtney Love back, and I can’t wait for her new record because there isn’t anyone else like her."

Love spoke about her upcoming album in a recent interview on Corgan's The Magnificent Others podcast and revealed Echo & The Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant contributed to the project, which will also feature Melissa Auf Der Maur of Hole.

Perry's latest album, Let It Die Here, came out earlier this month.
