Robbie Williams took to social media to explain a viral clip of a white substance falling from his face onto his microphone during a World Cup interview.
The substance appeared to fall from the musician’s nose or mouth and land on the microphone, before Williams picked it up and stuck it to his forehead while on camera.
Williams jokingly apologized for the “deeply unprofessional” moment, before revealing the substance as a half-chewed mint that he implied fell out of his mouth.
Robbie Williams is ready to apologize — for the fact that he has nothing to apologize for.
The British music superstar went majorly viral on Monday when a segment of an interview he gave to German streaming news platform Magenta TV after the World Cup final hit social media. At the beginning of Sunday’s interview, as Williams is reacting to Spain’s fresh win over Argentina, a white substance appears to fall from somewhere on Williams' face and land on his hot pink microphone. The singer then picks the substance up and places it on his forehead.
Speculation ran the gamut from the most charitable explanation (breath mint fragment) to the least charitable (you can imagine), but Williams quickly took to Instagram to set the record straight.
“I’d just like to apologize for the object that fell onto the microphone yesterday. It was deeply unprofessional, and people worried about me,” Williams shared in the video posted Monday, which he took shirtless in bed, wearing only a grave face.
“But it’s okay,” he continued, a smile breaking onto his face and shattering the illusion that he was making a sincere apology video. “Because I had several more too,” Williams said, opening his mouth to reveal two breath mints on his tongue.

A source close to Williams told The Sunon Monday that “poor Rob woke up to hundreds of messages from pals and fans asking what on earth was going on... He was obviously a bit bemused before [realizing] people had seen the Nicorette mint plopping from his mouth, and thinking it was something dodgy.”
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Williams for comment.

Fans familiar with Williams’ life and work quickly pointed out after the video began to circulate that the singer is over 20 years sober. If the substance were, say, something more illicit than a mint, concern may have ben warranted.
“Everybody knew I was in trouble, but they didn’t care, I’d gone past the point of no return,” he reflected in a new Take That documentary, out earlier this year (per news.com.au). “My life had spiraled out of control so severely that my manager understood what needed to happen, I needed to be carted off to rehab.”
Williams was one of several massive performers who performed at the 2026 World Cup final, held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Sunday. He took to the pitch with Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini to sing their joint hit, “Desire.”
