Robbie Williams has spoken out after he was seen with a white substance falling from his face at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.

The global superstar, 52, took to social media to clarify what had happened after a video of him during a live interview went viral. Robbie was speaking at the MetLife stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, July 12, when something white dropped onto his microphone.

Robbie very quickly picked up the mystery substance as he carried on with the interview at the World Cup showdown between Spain and Argentina, which saw the Spanish team crowned champions after a 1-0 victory in extra time. Robbie has since cleared up speculation that the white substance was cocaine by confirming what it actually was in an Instagram post.

Speaking in a video posted on Instagram as he lay shirtless in bed, he said, “I’d just like to apologize for the object that fell onto the microphone yesterday, it was deeply unprofessional."

He then laughed and poked out his tongue to reveal two mints on it as he added, “And people worried about me, but, it’s OK because I had several more.” Robbie captioned the video writing, “Just woke up and feeling…. Mint x,” adding a smiley face emoji.

The incident saw Robbie go viral as many speculated it was cocaine they had witnessed falling from his face. After he removed the mint from his microphone, it actually ended up stuck to his forehead when he used the same hand to scratch himself.

Amused fans commented on the clip of him on social media with one writing, “When a lump of coke falls off my face, I always stick it to my forehead too, so I don’t forget it later and can consume it again afterward.” A second said, “Robbie Williams playing with too much powder.”

Former Take That star Robbie has been very open in the past about his battles with alcoholism and substance abuse. He ended up in rehab multiple times, the most recent stint of which was in 2007 when he underwent treatment for his addiction to prescription drugs.

Writing in his 2017 book Reveal, Robbie explained, “I went to some very, very dark places. The ability to care is taken away in the addiction. That’s why so many people die from addiction.”
