Frances McDormand and Joel Coen have been a happy family for over four decades.

The power couple — with eight Academy Awards between them — married on April 1, 1984, a year after they met at her audition for his film Blood Simple. In 1995, they adopted their son Pedro from Paraguay and raised him out of the spotlight.

"As a mother, you live on the edge of disaster," McDormand told the Belfast Telegraph in 2018. "You just do. I didn't give birth to my son, I met him at 6 months old, but from the minute I held him and smelled him, I knew it was my job to keep him alive."

Although the couple keeps their home life relatively private, the actress has brought Pedro to public events like film festivals and the Oscars afterparty (after she won her second Best Actress trophy).

Coen and McDormand had a family night out with Pedro in 2004 at the Calhoun School dedication and gala benefit in New York City.

The actress, looking at her husband and son with adoration, previously told The Tampa Bay Times in 2000: "The reason I was born was to introduce Joel and Pedro together. The first time I saw them together I knew that's why I was born."

Prior to a 2005 event hosted by Coen and his brother Ethan, McDormand and Pedro were all smiles with producer Jay Allison and The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva.

At the opening night party for her 2011 Broadway play Good People, McDormand received support from Pedro, now a teenager.

The three made a rare public appearance as a family at the 2015 Rome Film Festival, where the couple was set to speak during an onstage conversation.

Following her second Best Actress win in 2018 for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, she shared her trophy with Pedro at the Governors Ball.

She revealed in a 2017 New York Times interview that Pedro, then 24, had become a personal trainer and an occasional grip on Coen's film sets. (As of 2020, he works in public relations.)

"He lives four blocks away from our apartment in New York," the star told The Times in 2017. "I run into him on the street, which is so fantastic.”

She brought Pedro as her plus-one to the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards, and though he might be out of the house, McDormand and Coen are never too far away from their son.

Speaking to Vogue in 2020, she revealed that Pedro had inherited her love of fashion.

"It’s kind of like a sport for us,” she said. “Shopping is what he and I do together.”
