WNBA star Sophie Cunningham has sparked a heated debate among fans after making a powerful statement addressing what she described as "trans hate."
In a recent interview with ESPN, Cunningham discussed the wider cultural and legal debates surrounding transgender athletes and the ongoing conversation about safeguarding women's sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men," she added.
I’m very much in the middle. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”

The Indiana Fever star’s remarks quickly drew widespread attention on social media, with fans offering divided reactions. "Sophie Cunningham is unafraid. Unafraid to be blatantly transphobic. 'I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men. Her own words. In an ESPN article," said one X user.
Another user added: "Calling trans women 'biological men' is a message of hatred". While a third person said: "F--- Sophie Cunningham and f--- any of her transphobic, bigoted supporters."
Some people however supported her statement. One person said: "Indiana Fever G Sophie Cunningham just took a definitive stand against men in women’s sports. Sophie Cunningham > Megan Rapinoe, Simone Biles & all the other female athletes who cowardly refuse to stand up for women & girls."

Another person said: "Calling this hate is how people avoid the actual locker room question. Sophie said the quiet part with more grace than most politicians can manage". While a third user added: "Sophie Cunningham literally says in this article that she isn’t anti-trans and wants to spread love. She just doesn’t want women to feel uncomfortable in the locker room. This is the most normal, rational way of thinking that most people 100% agree with."
Cunningham's comments come after the WNBA has already faced criticism over its cultural direction this week after announcing the beneficiaries of its All-Star Game charity initiative, with funds set to support organisations focused on keeping girls involved in sports.
However, the league faced further scrutiny after reports highlighted that one of the selected charities states its mission includes moving “beyond the binary of girl.” The organization’s inclusion sparked a response from former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines.
Gaines wrote on X: “In the least surprising news of the day, the WNBA continues to be a parody of a professional sports league committed to its own self-implosion."
