Shawn Hatosy knows fans want more Dr. Abbot.
The actor, 50, tells PEOPLE whether heād star in a night shift spinoff of The Pitt. He has a recurring role in the hit medical drama as Dr. Jack Abbot, a night shift attending physician at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
"There's been a lot of talk about the night shift. That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show," he says.
Hatosy says focusing on the night shift would allow the show to highlight different types of cases and characters. "Dr. Abbot chose the night shift because it's a certain kind of group of misfits that work together at night," he says.

But, he acknowledges that āeverything is greatā with the way the show runs now.
There may be more focus on the night shift staffers soon. On April 2, it was revealed that Ayesha Harris, who plays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to series regular for season 3.
The Pitt follows the day shift, led by Noah Wyleās Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, at the Pittsburgh hospital during a 15-hour shift. The night team makes appearances at the beginning and end of each season as they wrap up their rotations.
Hatosy, also known for his roles in Animal Kingdom and Chicago P.D., previously told The Hollywood Reporter that there was talk about Abbot being āfull-time in season 2.ā Instead, his character is revealed to moonlight with a SWAT team and gets injured on duty.

"Then they came back to me to suggest that heās in the E.R. in the middle of the season and I was like, what does that mean? Why am I coming in the middle? Am I dying? Am I coming in on a gurney?" the actor said.
While Hatosy didnāt nab much more screen time in season 2, he played an important role behind the camera. The actor directed his first episode of the series at the request of executive producer John Wells after he had directed an episode of their other show, Rescue High Surf.
"I was like, I donāt know if I can do Abbot and be a director at the same time. And then I went home that night and thought, 'Did I just talk myself out of a job?' So I made sure to call him and say, 'I didnāt mean that I donāt want to direct period.' And then I think in season 2 somebody ended up not being able to do it, and I was able to step in,ā he told the outlet.
Hatosy won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Abbot in 2025.
After his win, he told PEOPLE, āThis particular role came at a very kind of lean time for me and I didn't know what the role was when I first read it.ā
The actor said Abbot is āa character that I love deeply and I'm thrilled to play for as long as they'll have me."
New episodes of The Pitt season 2 drop Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
