The episode featured multiple cameos familiar to fans of The Handmaid's Tale

The Hulu series has already been renewed for season 2

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Testaments season 1.

A rebellion is brewing in The Testaments.

On May 27, the season 1 finale of Hulu's dystopian drama premiered, featuring some major reveals and a couple of surprising cameos. The follow-up series to The Handmaid's Tale features a new generation of girls living in Gilead, including Chase Infiniti as Agnes and Lucy Halliday as Daisy. Ann Dowd is also part of the cast, reprising her Emmy-winning role as Aunt Lydia.

One of the new characters is Rebecka “Becka” Grove (Mattea Conforti), Agnes' best friend who killed her father in the season's penultimate episode. That action has a ripple effect in the season finale: When the episode opens, Agnes and Daisy each work to free their friend from prison — and a likely death sentence.

Here's everything to know about what happens in the season finale of The Testaments.

Are Agnes and Commander Weston still engaged?

In episode 8, Agnes became engaged to the powerful Commander Weston (Reed Diamond), a high-ranking official in Gilead. Although Weston was previously "really excited about our future together," two episodes later, he calls off the wedding.

During the finale, a distraught Agnes reveals to Weston that she was one of the girls whom Dr. Grove (Randal Edwards) — a dentist in Gilead and Becka's dad — sexually abused. She asks for his help freeing Becka — something that he obliges. Soon enough, Becka is remanded to house arrest alongside her mom (Kate Hewlett).

However, Agnes' dad, Commander Mackenzie (Nate Corddry), soon informs her that Weston has canceled his impending nuptials, citing the need to distance himself from the Becka situation — something neither Agnes' father nor stepmother, Paula (Amy Seimetz) fully believe to be true.

After killing her father, Becka is held in a women's detention center. With the help of Weston, Becka is eventually released and sent back to her family home.

Alongside Aunt Lydia and Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li), Becka's mom devises a plan, deciding that she will confess to killing her husband in order to save Becka's future. Despite objections from Becka, Mrs. Grove confesses to the murder and is hanged for the crime.

Meanwhile, Becka remains engaged to Garth Chapin (Brad Alexander), Agnes' guard who will soon be promoted to the rank of Commander. Even though she still has lingering feelings for him, Agnes encourages Garth to follow through on his engagement, so Becka isn't completely ostracized from society.

After Garth is made a commander, he ultimately marries Becka.

Who makes cameos in The Testaments finale?

There are two major finale cameos that should look familiar to fans of The Handmaid's Tale book and TV adaptation.

During the episode, Elisabeth Moss returns, reprising her role as June. In it, she attempts to rescue Daisy from Gilead — but ultimately, Daisy makes the decision to stay.

"It was hard not to be able to share that," Moss said in a May 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter about keeping her cameo a secret. "But I knew and Bruce [Miller, Testaments creator] knew that June's story was not just going to continue in a way of her being in one scene [of The Testaments]. We knew that I was going to have multiple episodes, and that there was going to be an arc and a larger plan for June with The Testaments."

Another cameo is author Margaret Atwood, who plays a prison matron. She previously played an Aunt in The Handmaid's Tale series premiere, per Entertainment Weekly.

"[Margaret is] the hardest-working 86-year-old on the planet," The Testaments executive producer Warren Littlefield told Gold Derby in May 2026. "And whenever you engage with Margaret, you've learned something. I do; I learn something about America each time I talk to this brilliant Canadian."

Does Daisy escape Gilead?

No, Daisy decides to stay in Gilead and sabotage from within. She secretly meets with June, who intends to remove her from Gilead — but Daisy convinces her that her skills are better used from within.

"I wanted, at least, a surrogate mother feeling," Miller told PEOPLE in May 2026 of the bond between Daisy and June. "I did that as much as I could, and honestly cast two people who looked quite a bit alike for no good reason."

Daisy goes on to reveal to Agnes that she's actually Hannah, the daughter of "terrorist" June Osborne.

"She isn't a terrorist. She fights for what she believes in — just like you do," Daisy tells her friend. "I met her once. Your mother wasn't just a Handmaid. She was the Handmaid."

In one of the final scenes in the episode, June finds a jar of honey on her doorstep with a note from Daisy inside.

"These girls are stronger than you think. Maybe God made them that way. Or maybe, they just came out that way. Strong as hell," Daisy writes in her message. "But I'm going to do what Mayday couldn't, I'm going to destroy Gilead with what it values most. I'm staying in the fight and I'm going to create my own army."

She concludes, "Because nothing can be more powerful than a teenage girl."

The new generation of Plums and Greens are starting to fight back, building a resistance from within the walls of Gilead.

Becka has been married off to Garth, which means she is on her way to becoming a Gilead Wife, while Agnes is grappling with the reveal that she is the daughter of June. Meanwhile, Daisy is planning to topple the authoritarian regime from the inside.

Their rebellion will continue in The Testaments, which has already been renewed for season 2.
