Shakiracelebrated Lionel Messi’s incredible World Cup performance after Argentina secured a semifinal victory on July 15. The music icon took to Instagram to applaud the 39-year-old forward after he delivered a tournament-leading eight goals at Atlanta Stadium (Mercedes-Benz Stadium).

Why Shakira’s message to Lionel Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo is drawing attention

Taking to Instagram Stories on July 16, the Colombian singer, who now resides in Miami, shared a tribute to the Argentine star, just days before he and his team face Spain in the World Cup final on July 19 at New York-New Jersey Stadium.

The singer wrote, as stated by People, “What @lionelmessi is doing is beyond extraordinary! It shows the values of a man who is deeply committed and disciplined, in challenging times, and all odds. Proving that a person is not defined by age or what others say.”

Shakira’s message came one day after Messi helped Argentina secure a 2-1 semifinal victory over England. This World Cup marks the sixth tournament of Messi’s career. Shakira also showed her support for Antonela Roccuzzo, sharing a heartfelt message for Messi’s wife and fellow mother. She wrote, “I know that having a woman like @antonelaroccuzzo by his side gives him the strength and inspiration to prove that!”

The tribute stood out as it celebrated both Messi’s achievements and the support he receives from his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, ahead of the World Cup final.

Shakira, who wrote the official song of the 2026 World Cup, Dai Dai, and sang her first official World Cup song, Waka Waka, at the tournament’s closing ceremony in 2010, shared her thoughts in People’s June cover story. The 49-year-old Queen of Latin Music said, “Every World Cup is really magical, and I think this one is going to be all about bringing people together in this very sensitive moment in time, socially and politically.”

The final, which is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, will feature the first-ever FIFA World Cup Halftime Show, with Shakira, BTS, Madonna, Justin Bieber, and other global stars, curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. The show will begin at 3 p.m. ET and air on Telemundo, FOX, and Peacock, reports E! News.
